The Nike Art Gallery

If you like art, the very first place you should go to in Lagos is the Nike Art Gallery.  The Nike Art Gallery, Lagos is one of 4 art centres owned by Nike Okundaye, a well-known Nigerian female artist who, with an education that went no further than primary 6, has gone on to build an enviable international career as an artist.

The unusual, eye-catching doors at the Nike Art Gallery

The Nike Art Gallery, Lagos located in Lekki, is made up of four floors housing about 15,000 works of art.  The gallery only shows and sells work done by Nigerian artistes and is said to be the largest gallery of its kind.  The inside of the gallery is beautiful from its unusual doors to its bright white walls covered in all sorts of art work ranging from paintings and sculptures to fabrics and mini-installations.  With so many pieces of art to look at, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed so I would suggest you go one day, get a feel of all the floors then go back at other times focusing on one floor each time you go.

The art at the gallery includes work by such artists as Ndidi Dike, Peju Alatise, Tola Wewe, Ayorinde Olotu, Kolade Oshinowo and of course, Nike herself.  Some of the pieces at the gallery cost millions of naira but there are also more affordably-priced works of art there.  And if buying a piece of art is simply out of the question at the moment, indulging your eyes in the beauty created by Nigerian artists is free.  Go enjoy some of the most beautiful art you will see in Lagos at the Nike Art Gallery today.

Address:  2 Elegushi Road (3rd Roundabout), Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.

Entry into the gallery is free.
