Going Places with Nubby Twiglet

One of Nubby’s earliest holiday memories is spending time with her family in a Bavarian-themed village called Leavenworth just a few hours outside Seattle.

Going Places is a regular feature on this blog.  It is an interview-style feature where different personalities tell us the highlights of their holidays.  Enjoy it.

1. Tell us about your very first holiday.

I don’t exactly recall what my very first holiday was but every year as a child, my family vacationed in a Bavarian-themed village a few hours outside of Seattle called Leavenworth. I had a pair of lederhosen with red leather straps and heart-shaped pockets that I’d wear around town and we’d spend our afternoons wandering through the shops and sitting in the Beer Garden while a traditional German band played. To this day, I love cuckoo clocks, lederhosen and taxidermy!

2. What has been your most memorable holiday?

In February, I spent an exciting two weeks bouncing between a trio of cities that included New York, Paris and Reykjavik with my friend Gala Darling. We shopped, dressed ridiculously, did photo shoots, stayed at a boutique hotel in Le Marais designed by Christian Lacroix, posed in front of the Arc De Triomphe in mouse ears, visited the Blue Lagoon during a snow storm in Iceland and lunched at our favorite Polish restaurant in New York…we’re both Virgos and have a hard time just being still! Every trip for us has to feel like some twisted, triumphant accomplishment for us! Needless to say, I spent the two days following our return jetlagged as all hell, sprawled across my friend’s couch.

3. What do you like most about vacations?

The excitement and anticipation, of course! I love the feeling you get when you visit somewhere new for the first time and the excitement of that initial exploration.

4. What do you hate most about vacations?

The things that everyone else hates: packing, rushing to the airport, getting through security, the long flights, eating food that you’re not accustomed to and of course walking so much that you end up with blistered feet! These are just small nuisances, though. I love the thrill of traveling and breaking up my normal routine.

5. How would you spend your perfect day on holiday?

Exploring the every day life of a city. I am not a big fan of museums or tourist attractions. Instead, I like to walk around, visit cafés and street vendors, stop into shops and bakeries and do anything else that gives me an authentic feel of the city I’m in.

6. Where would you most like to go on holiday? Why?

Germany, Austria and Switzerland! My parents went to all three of these countries in the early 80s and I flipped though their photo albums as a child. I want to see them for myself!
