Holidays with Tunde Aladese

Watching flamenco dancers in Spain was one of the things that made Tunde’s holiday in Spain memorable.

1. Tell us about the very first holiday you remember taking.

Ever, ever? I guess road trips with my family are my earliest memories. Either going to Ondo state (where my parents are from) or going to Niger State where my father had some business interests. My love of road trips was born in those years and even now, if I’m going to get into a car for more than an hour (and traffic isn’t to blame for that), I still get that sense of adventure, and that everything is possible. It’s even translated to planes.

2.    What has been your most memorable holiday?

Can I say all of them? But maybe the year I went to Spain? Between Paris and 3 cities in Spain, I did all the travel and arrangements on my own, visiting places I’d never been, taking train rides that lasted almost entire days, seeing beautiful scenery on the way and eating lots of fantastic food at my destinations. I was stuck in my hotel room in Madrid but in Barcelona and Tarifa, between eating lots of paella, watching flamenco and Spanish guitar concerts, or sometimes just walking around or sitting and watching the world pass by, there were a lot of moments where I just felt like ‘I could do this indefinitely’. Then again, Broadway in New York last year was pretty awesome for a musical fanatic like myself.

3.    What do you like most about vacations?

The chance to get away, see somewhere else, maybe be someone else. The chance to do something new, see something new. To engage with the world and discover the world. The sense of adventure. The shopping’s not so bad either.

4.    What do you hate most about vacations?

Having to drag my luggage around. I get more exercise on holiday than I do at home.

5.    How would you spend your perfect day on holiday?

I’m hoping to still discover that. I couldn’t possibly know that yet, there’s still so many places to visit and things to try.

6.    Where would you most like to go on holiday?  Why?

How long can this list be? But my immediate wishlist ranges from an Asia trip (covering Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea), to a South American trip (including Argentina, Brazil and maybe a couple more places), to a second Spain trip exploring the cities I didn’t get to see, to a Kilimanjaro climb, to a Morocco trip, Italy, South of France and Senegal. Plus I am suddenly obsessed with the idea of going to the Coachella music festival sometime in the next few years.

Tunde Aladese writes scripts for a living, occasionally acts for the challenge, and makes music for her soul.
