The one thing I’ve learned from holidays is that my expectations and reality are usually two different things. When I go on holiday expecting to have fun, I usually don’t and when I think my holiday is going to be quiet and almost boring, it turns out to be a blast. The most recent example of this was when I went to The Gambia. I went there alone and from all I had read on the internet, The Gambia was a pretty quiet place with the ‘activity’ being most promoted being lying on the beach. So I was pretty surprised to make friends on the plane with other tourists headed there and doing something fun everyday from cruising on the River Gambia, to cycling round Bakau and going clubbing. I’ve learnt that when I go on holiday, I need to prepare myself to be surprised and take Oscar Wilde’s advice ‘To expect the unexpected shows a thoroughly modern intellect.’
