Hotel Review: Axari Hotel, Calabar

An executive/ single room at Axari Hotel

Axari is a medium-sized hotel about 15 minutes drive from the Calabar International Airport.  It is a reasonably-priced hotel – single rooms cost N13, 500 per night and the rooms are clean, large and decently-furnished.  I’m not sure you can find such a room at that price in Lagos.

Axari hotel has got a restaurant, a swimming pool, a gym and a conference room and the room I stayed in had a fridge and quite a few DStv channels – definitely more channels than I am used to seeing in Lagos hotels.  While the rooms are okay, I have to say that the service wasn’t among the best I have come across in hotels in Lagos or even Abuja.  I ordered a meal via room service and it took over an hour to arrive.  I might as well have ordered food from Lagos.  When I asked about being connected to the hotel’s WIFI, the person I spoke to at reception appeared not to know what I was talking about then said she would call me back in twenty minutes.  The call never came.

In spite of all this, all the people I came across who had stayed at Axari said it was a nice hotel.  It’s either they lowered their standards because they were in Nigeria or I have higher standards than I realise.  All the same, if you’re new to Calabar and not sure where to stay, Axari wouldn’t be a bad choice.
